boardroom fashion with Etienne malec

French horologist and CEO of Baltic Watches, Etienne Malec, tells unekual about his minimalist style and disdain for

suits

What do you enjoy wearing most? It could be anything

Well, my childhood was all about the skateboarding scene and it's incredibly open fashion culture. Baggy clothes that were influenced by hip hop, European punk vibes and Californian hippy styles. Quite the antagonist to suits and corporate culture.

What is your approach to the traditional suit? And when do you decide to wear it?

Even now as an adult, my opinion of the suit hasn’t changed that much. It’s too formal and conveys values that I’m just not comfortable with. Everyone desires a way to express oneself and I just believe that there are more ways to do that without wearing suits. Fine, they remain acceptable for weddings, ha!

Do you have a uniform?

My daily wear is usually something like a short worker jacket, in blue, which pairs perfectly with some straight cutblue or black jeans, a white tee and some sneakers. For the sneakers, a very classic pair of Adidas Superstar 80’s which are nice and discreet.

How would you describe your personal style?

I am most comfortable wearing the simplest pieces you can find. You could describe it as an East-Parisian style with a small Californian touch. It suits every situation and doesn’t tell too much about you. It also reminds me of my favorite American nu-metal and rap brands!

Thank you very much to Etienne for taking the time to answer our questions. Image by Calvin Courjon
