The ref. 3970 has become a favourite for many collectors for its versatility in terms of vintage aesthetic and wearability - especially the 2nd Series. With the leaf hands and baton indices, the 2nd series keeps many design cues from its predecessors - the 2499 and 1518. Patek Philippe changed the reference number from 3970 to 3970E with the second series due to the screw down caseback which made the watch waterproof, or “Etanche” in French.
